Press Release: Clarification around the Costs of The 2010 Web Site This press release was emailed out at : 15 June, 2009 11:36 _________________________________________________________________ The launch of the new 2010 website has elicited comments about project cost, which need to be clarified. At the briefing to journalists last Wednesday it was made clear that the total cost of the electronic information approach for 2010 will be around R6.5 million. This is not just for 2010 but is being designed as a legacy project to incorporate our existing site. The costs include development costs, hosting costs, capital equipment required and the materials needed for the various phases. The current projected cost for all the work done until 31 December 2010 is around R5.5 Million but I believe that we will contain that cost to under R5 million. The current actual cost of Phase 1, although it is not complete, is just under R1 million. The three phases are: Phase 1 -- Information Portal - this includes a wide range of information in multiple languages, a web cam of the stadium, a Stadium Time Lapse showing Arch completion, and Site Search functionality. Phase 2 - An Interactive Portal incorporating video content, Durban Image Galleries, interactive city mapping and other facilities. The content will be translated into French, German and Spanish. Phase 3 - A Visitor Portal - focussing extensively on visitor content, FIFA Content Feed will be integrated, and blogging functionality will be available in different languages. The budget indicated is not only for web development costs, but includes costs such as shooting videos and translation. The 2010 website will form part of other legacy projects. It will evolve into an information portal which will incorporate the current www.durban.gov.za website and the use of the functionalities (Silverlight, Photosynth and Sharepoint) and content from the 2010 website. The web servers have been specified to accommodate the development of the information portal post-2010 which will prevent further costs being incurred. Colin C.
