Durban Metro Police Service Vacancy Rate Update – January 2012
In April 2011 I identified that DMPS had a vacancy rate of 48% with 1056 of 2200 posts vacant. Now as of January 2012, a marginal improvement sees 81 posts filled resulting in a 44.3% vacancy rate.
Of concern is the fact that while the number of sergeant and captain posts have increased by 26 to 193 (26 new posts), the number of vacancies has increased by 32 posts from 54 (32.3%) in 2011 to 86 (44.6%) now.
Sergeants and Captains are the leaders that make or break a police service on the ground.
January 2012
Total Uniform staff as per the Organogram = 2202 (+2 posts)
Total Uniform staff vacancies = 975 (-81 posts)
Total Uniform staff vacancy rate = 44.3% (-3.7% points)
Total Sergeant/Captain posts = 193 (+26 posts)
Total Sergeant/Captain vacancies = 86 (+32 posts)
Total Sergeant/Captain vacancy rate = 44.6% (12.2% points)
April 2011
Total Uniform staff as per the Organogram = 2200
Total Uniform staff vacancies = 1056
Total Uniform staff vacancy rate = 48.0%
Total Sergeant/Captain posts = 167
Total Sergeant/Captain vacancies = 54

July 17th, 2012 at 9:48 pm
At this stage not possible due to no vacancies, but under any other circumstances wait for an advert and put in a CV – Must have matric, drivers licence, no criminal record in the minimum and then of course pass fitness criteria in the initial stages
And then compete with the other 30 000 that apply

Its my passion and dream 2 be a metro police officer. I’ve had this from a small child its something I think about everyday of my life. When I see the metro officers I get so excited and keep saying that will be me 1 day.. This passion is something that will never go away from my heart. Its like I live and dream the metro everyday of my life.. I so want 2 join the metro. I know my god will see me threw and I strongly believe that I have what it takes 2 me a metro police officer. I know most of the things when it comes 2 the metro. I live this dream that I will 1 day be there. And my aim is not 2 sit 1 place in the metro. As a young man I’m determined that I will make it 2 the top with my hard work when I do get in the metro.. I hope the head see this and give me a response for I love this job with everything I have… Trevolin chetty
